Abstract

Cervical cancer in Latin America continues to be an alarming and worrying reason for women’s mortality. Its association with the human papillomavirus is increasingly clearer, as well as sociocultural factors determine this scourge. A systematic literature search was conducted in the main databases, focusing on the relationship between the virus, its main serotypes, and hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptive methods. In conclusion, the mechanisms of contraceptives can modify the natural history of HPV infection and the development of cervical cancer, due to local changes in the cervix and alterations in host-virus dynamics, although regarding some such as the IUD there is still debate; As for the condom, it is described that its use decreases the risk of HPV infection and progression of precancerous lesions.
