Abstract

Monkeypox is a rare zoonotic disease in our region, caused by a virus from the Poxviridae family,
Chordopoxvirinae subfamily, and Orthopoxvirus genus, with a direct relationship to the smallpox
virus,(1). The term “monkeypox” originated in Denmark in the mid-20th century, and the first human
case was reported in 1970,(2),(3), in Zaire (now Congo). To date, the disease is endemic in Central
and West Africa, with the first cases outside,(4) the endemic area reported in 2003.
The primary reservoir remains uncertain, but rats are thought to be a vector for transmission to
humans. Interaction with animals and the spread between healthy and asymptomatic individuals
are,(5),(6), also potential routes. This systematic review aims to highlight what is currently known
about a potential new pandemic and the necessary precautions and actions related to the issue.
