Prurigo and phototherapy, the multidisciplinary management of chronic prurigo
Keywords:
Prurigo, phototherapy, prurigo nodularis, prurigo pigmentosa, photodermatosis.Abstract
Prurigo is a chronic disease consisting of the formation of pruritic nodules or papules, secondary to
persistent scratching of the injured area, caused by allergic reactions, systemic and/or metabolic
diseases and can greatly affect the quality of life of patients who suffer from it. In fact, there are
currently few epidemiological studies worldwide on this disease, which is considered uncommon.
Its prevalence is estimated at 72 per 100,000 inhabitants. However, in our experience, it could be
considerably more frequent. It is more prevalent in the age group between 50 and 60 years and in
black people. No significant differences between sexes have been described.
Meanwhile at the national level, a cross-sectional study is reported that included the clinical
records of patients with prurigo seen in the Photodermatology Service of the University Hospital
Federico Lleras Acosta Dermatological Center between 2011 and 2016 (17). The characteristics of
Colombian patients with prurigo are similar to those reported in other Latin American countries:
onset of the disease towards middle age, predominantly in women, with adequate response to
topical and systemic treatment.
Throughout history multiple oral and topical treatments have been described, aimed at controlling
the predominant symptom which is persistent pruritus, as well as improving the patient’s quality
of life both physically and emotionally. Phototherapy has now been established as an effective
treatment option in cases where oral or topical treatments, antihistamines or corticosteroids are
contraindicated either because of allergy to them or because of side effects that may exacerbate
their underlying diseases.
