Abstract

HPV is the number one sexually transmitted virus in latin american countries and is
responsible for most of the cases of cervical cancer in women in a reproductive age.
We conducted a systematic review of the literature in the most important search
engines, PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar and Lilacs, focusing on the association
between the different contraceptives more often used by women and HPV serotypes.
We found that the mechanisms of contraceptives can modify the natural history of
HPV infection and the development of cervical cancer due to local changes in the
cervix and alterations in the host-virus dynamics, although regarding some, such as
the IUD, there is still debate; also, it is described the use of condoms reduces the risk
of HPV infection and progression of precancerous lesions.
